Ethiopian Paralympian makes anti-government gesture

tamiru

Rio, Brazil (BBC News) — Ethiopian Paralympic runner Tamiru Demisse crossed his arms above his head in a political protest as he went over the finish line in Rio.

Tamiru came in second in his 1500m T13 race for visually impaired runners.

The gesture echoed the one made by compatriot Feyisa Lilesa at the end of the Olympic marathon.

It refers to protesters from the Oromo ethnic group in Ethiopia who have been involved in months of demonstrations as they demand greater political rights.

Feyisa is now in the United States after saying it was not safe for him to return home.

Tamiru’s 1500m race was also notable for the fact that the top three runners, Algeria’s Abdellatif Baka, Tamiru and Kenya’s Henry Kirwa, all ran times faster than the winner of the Olympic 1500m race.

Washington DC Metropolitan Area: Call for Peaceful Protest Rally

$

oromo_community

The Oromo Community Organization of Washington DC is hosting a massive Oromo peaceful protest organized by all Oromo Community Organizations in North America, which will be held on September 29, 2016 in Washington DC to condemn the authoritarian and repressive Ethiopian government.

As we all know, the Ethiopian government has intensified the use of force in an extremely violent situation to control political discontents in Oromia. Its military and security forces are brutally killing, detaining, and kidnapping innocent Oromo of all ages to deny the long overdue Oromo demands. The regime’s violence has now expanded to other regions including Amhara region. The recent Qilinto incident, believed to be a drama staged by Ethiopian government, was to deliberately attack prisoners of conscience; and it should be condemned with strongest terms.

Therefore, the Oromo Community Organization of Washington DC is asking all Oromo in Washington Metropolitan DC area to be part of this historic peaceful rally on 29 September 2016, which will be held in front of the U.S. Capitol, the U.S. State Department, the World Bank, and the White House. In order to facilitate the event, the OCO is also asking for volunteers to take part in various committees of the demonstration including transportation services.

In Egypt, Oromo Asylum Seekers Desperate Enough to Self-Immolate

By Chalaine Chang

Frustrations among Oromo refugees from Ethiopia stranded in Egypt over long waits for their claims to be processed by the U.N. refugee agency and the high rate of rejection have recently mounted to horrifying extremes.

CAIRO (News Deeply) – On July 21, Getu Ayana, a 26-year-old Oromo asylum seeker self-immolated in front of the city’s United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) office. Asli Nure, another refugee from the Ethiopian ethnic group, ran towards Getu in a panic. She too was soon engulfed in flames. Both were rushed to hospital, but had already sustained third-degree burns over 60 and 40 percent of their bodies, respectively. Nure died five days later, and on July 31, Ayana too.

UNHCR closed its doors for three days. The issuing of refugee status determination (RSD) decisions resumed normally once it was reopened, but the decisions for Ethiopian asylum seekers were suspended for an extra week.

A group of 40 Oromo asylum seekers, including Ayana and Nure, had been camping outside the UNHCR offices for four months at that point. According to the witnesses who camped alongside the pair, the self-immolation was the culmination of months of frustration. Ayana and Nure acted because of what fellow demonstrators claim are the long wait times for refugee status determination (RSD) interviews and the high rate of rejection for Oromos in Egypt.

The night before the incident, the group decided that if there were any more rejections they would take some sort of action. “If we go back to our country, all we can expect is jail and torture. Rather than return back to Ethiopia to die, we decided it would be better for us to die here,” said Abdo, a teacher from Ethiopia’s Oromia state.

Thirty-three of the 40 agreed to self-immolate. “On the Wednesday evening, we collected money to buy a container of gas,” said Jafar Umar Mohammed, a farmer from Oromia. Ayana went ahead – but the others say they may follow if the UNHCR does not address their concerns.

Sophia Ibrahim Sani, a single mother of four, was one of the few that didn’t agree to self-immolate, but she echoed a similar sense of desperation. “If I didn’t have my children here depending on me, I would have participated as well. If you have problems and there are no solutions, it’s better to die,” she said. Demonstrations against the allegedly long wait times and rejection rate began on March 27, when nearly 300 Oromos gathered in protest outside UNHCR.

UNHCR staff held a series of meetings with community leaders to address the complaints of the community,” said Elizabeth Tan, theUNHCR regional representative in Egypt. “After two weeks of intensive discussions, UNHCR reached an agreement with the community on a number of issues,” she said. While the majority of protestors dispersed by April 11, around 40 remained, camping outside the offices.

“The Oromo community leaders told us to go home. But where should we go? We don’t have a home, we don’t have anywhere to go,” explained Abdo. Mufti, a young shopkeeper from Oromia, said that while squatting on the site was originally an act of protest, it also became a necessity for those with no other housing options. “We told the community leaders many times we don’t have a house and that we have security problems,” he said.

He said he is afraid to run into the smugglers that brought him into Egypt. “I owe them money, money I don’t have, and they’ve already attacked me once in the streets,” said Mufti.

Sani said she too had security issues when she lived in Arab al-Maadi, a densely populated neighborhood in Cairo where most Oromos live. “Egyptian teenagers would chase my daughters and throw stones or shards of glass at them,” she said. According to both Mufti and Sani, attacks on refugees in Egypt are frequent, especially on ones from African countries. When they try to report problems to Egyptian police, they are often ignored.

Though the Oromos make up the largest ethnic group in Ethiopia, their culture has long been repressed by successive Ethiopian governments. “I was a teacher of Afan-Oromo, English and Amhara in a preparatory school. The government accused me of teaching the students Oromo culture and opposition politics. Because of this, I was arrested repeatedly,” said Abdo.

Sani said that between 2005 and 2013, she was detained twice – once for three years and the second time for 18 months. She was accused of having links to the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF), a common pretense used by the Ethiopian government to carry out arbitrary arrests and detentions of Oromos. According to Human Rights Watch (HRW), “tens of thousands have been targeted for arbitrary detention, torture, and other abuses, even when there is no evidence linking them to the OLF.

The HRW report states that between November 2015 and June 2016, over 400 protesters are estimated to have been killed in Oromia. Those protests initially began to oppose the expansion of Addis Ababa. While the plan was shelved, further grievances with the government’s grip over power and repressive tactics have returned to the fore in recent months. By August, protests spread throughout Oromia and into the Amhara region, with the government responding harshly, leaving nearly another 100 protesters dead.

“Since I’ve been living here, each week they hand out around 40 rejection letters, and maybe one acceptance for Oromos,” said Abdo. Tan said that negative RSD decisions for Oromos have increased between 2014 and 2016. But she noted, “RSD decisions are based on asylum seekers’ individual claims and UNHCR uses country of origin information approved by UNHCR HQ to help assess the individual claims.”

“The waiting period between registration and RSD interviews is often lengthy because of UNHCR’s lack of capacity,” said Tan. She noted that UNHCR has reduced RSD processing from 28 to 16 months, but added that the majority of the decisions being issued now are from cases filed in 2013 and 2014.

The majority of asylum seekers entering Egypt come from Syria, Sudan, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia, Eritrea and Iraq. As of July 30, 184,116 refugees and asylum seekers have registered withUNHCR in Egypt. Between July 2015 and July 2016, the number of Ethiopian (including Oromo and Amhara) asylum seekers and refugees alone has nearly doubled from 5,518 to 10,288.

According to Tan, emergency housing and financial assistance in Egypt are provided for the most vulnerable newcomers. However she noted, “Only between 15 and 35 percent of refugees and asylum seekers are provided with financial assistance, and the levels of assistance are inadequate to sustain a basic standard of living. This low level is due to the insufficient funding levels for refugee programs in Egypt.”

Refugees in Egypt often find themselves caught between personal and financial insecurity. Employment opportunities for refugees in Egypt are slim and financial assistance very limited. This makes access to housing, medical treatment and basics difficult. Oromo refugees bear a particularly heavy toll due to such dearth of support.

The Ugly Truth out of the Demonstration in Washington DC: was it against deception of TPLF or to mislead Oromo identity?

Ilma Saba (PhD)

I saw youtube video of Ethiopians’ demonstration in collaboration with Oromo activists. The demonstration was held in Washington DC on 08 Sep 2016 with the aim to drag down the flying flag attributed to TPLF and uncover the evil acts behind the flag of the dictatorial regime in Ethiopian empire. In due course, I saw one person named Gamachis who was supposed to give remarks in Afaan Oromo. Meanwhile, another actor on the demonstration hibernating behind Gamachis was wrapping him with Habesha flag. The person insisting on Gamachis to wear and chant Habesha flag is, no doubt, an Habesha who wants to see his flag embraced by Oromo. The Habesha person constantly checks the flag on the shoulder of that Oromo person. It was mandatory for Gamachis to carry that flag while his comment is progressing. Nevertheless, that Habesha person didn’t show up himself rising Oromo flag if he really wanted to reflect solidarity between Oromo and Habesha.

Here is the inference of that day’s demonstration drama and the reality of aspiration of Habesha for “solidarity” with Oromo. The effort of that Habesha person to force Gamachis wear the Habesha flag has far reaching inherent implication. The act reminds me the very fact of Habesha interest to hide Oromo identity under their supremacy and that they only want to manipulate Oromo as their messenger toward their goal. They think that Oromo can only be their ally as long he/she holds their flag on shoulder (accept their supremacy) be it willingly otherwise forcefully. In doing so, they deceive us to lick their venom coated with honey as stated in their proverb: hulum befiker new. The fact that rogue Habesha person smiles while he was covering Gamchis’s identity reflect what they are saying “love”  and the constant check of the flag on Gamchis’s shoulder reflect that it is willy-nilly for the Oromo to accept Habesha identify in order to be considered their ally. The fact that Gamachis was struggling to get away with the flag and the act of the rogue Habesha person suffice as an evidence of my thought.

Consequently, both actors were telling us (viewers in general and the Oromo in particular) that Oromo can be trustworthy stakeholder to Habesha if only endorse the goal behind the flag: one colonial Habesha regime in Ethiopian empire. Habesha is not expected to fly Oromo flag because they are struggling to re-gain the hegemony which re-assures that they remain master and Oromo as their colonial subjects. If Oromo could continue to chant its own flag, they think that is fatal to their ultimatum of keeping the empire intact. Habesha think, Oromo’s equality with Habesha would be sin against their Godly government. Hello Habesha: remember Oromo have our defined interest and our own unique position as different from yours when it comes to the fate of the Ethiopian empire. Also keep in mind that, leave alone between, even within: we Oromo are serious when it comes to addressing the issue of flying flag and its implication. Indeed, we have no shoulder (tolerance) to carry any flag that don’t historically belong to Oromo nation! You better stop requiring Oromo: to be called Habesha when we give you smiling face for possible compromise to be named Oromo Ethiopian or to carry your flag when we call for common benefits of collaboration against the current tyranny.

Let me clearly say, perhaps, on behalf of that person forced to carry the Habesha flag: green, yellow and red color with or without star, lion and/or other emblems it used to contain. The cooperation of the presumed Oromo person with Habesha to show up on the demonstration is welcomed by me. On the other hand, the most important purpose of that Oromo’s accompany on the demonstration is not to regain the lost colonial power symbolized by that flag. Habesha should always keep in mind that the mystery of our (Oromo’s) hate and struggle against the goal of that tricolor Ethiopian flag is not as such necessarily limited to its former emblem or the present star. We want to do away with its objective of sewing of the tricolor garment to reflect that people were brought under consolidated colonial power by force! That is the truth!

The tragedy of the drama on that demonstration also reminded me the usual Habesha’s act of propaganda: one in which they try to pool out some who might be member of their organization and yet bearing Oromo name in that person’s genealogy to eco him/her as if he/she is Oromo representing the need of Oromo nation. By presence of such person around Habesha or in the so called their Ethiopian political organization, they want to spare on us that we need to praise their organization as if belong us, too. Habesha politicians and elites please understand that the interest of Oromo nation and its hero fighters for freedom of equality is in no way about individual person or its needs! Learn, learn, learn and know that we refused and are fighting inequitable colonial governing system of Habesha (the TPLF’s & its predecessors’). Likewise, in no way we dare to neither praise a person nor struggle to retaliate individual!

Oppressed peoples of Ethiopian empire are struggling to regain their deprived right to free choice whether to be administrated under one umbrella of democratic and just government or not. A willy-nilly type of unity under the name Ethiopian never worked and is not gonna work, too. I hope you are seeing the fractures of what Habesha regime’s unity used to be claimed in the course of maintaining Ethiopian empire by the method of such as political marriage and dismissal of identity of the subject people. Contrary to that claim, you may note the confusion of descendants’ as a victim of the past colonial regime’s wrong policy. Clearly, the parents of such descendants (so-called mixed blood) were subject to the then politically motivated marriage and now their offspring calculating their blood level in search of their true identity. The only case I know addressing blood level is important is for animals for the purpose of breeding. In case of inheritance of human being, kinship is either paternal as in Oromo (that is also why Oromo says: biyya abbaa koo) or matriarchy. l it is up to the person to define his/her lineage which way but never damp that burden on others who were resisting that kind of mess. So, If I were Habesha, I will never be on that road again to bury the identity of other nations and nationalities but learn from historical mistake and move forward on the road to equality, freedom and long lasting unity. Only true dedication wins heartedly collaboration and purposeful togetherness!

Hence, it is not that you tell us your blood proportion, Oromo name somewhere in your heritage nor an attempt to get Oromo picture flying your flag that makes us cooperate with you. In that line Oromo could be smarter to easily make it happen, if need be. I am afraid to tell you that, however, by virtue of our difference in the psychological feelings, we easily get to misunderstand each other’s political interest. Based on your psychology or inherent nature find yourself where you belong: silent or shout, doer or talker, fighter or lobber, fatherland or motherland, paternal or maternal, etc. I know Oromo possess characters of the first entries of the contrasting alternatives I mentioned. I wish you should not belong to the second traits in each contracting entries. I will understand your choice when action speaks louder than words!

Therefore, if you guys are prodemocracy and equality and are demanding true unity approved by peoples’ will, refrain from such evil acts of forcing someone to wear or dress your identity (flag) or whatever domination of that sort. I hope readers will join me in the validity of analysis of the visual data (video) so that understands that my aim is not about something else but surfacing the bitter and yet ugly truth hidden in the tactical call for collaboration. Feyisa Lilesa: ‘I am not seeking asylum in the US’

Long-distance runner who won silver for Ethiopia at Olympic Games in Rio wants “superiority of one ethnic group to end”.

Washington, DC (Aljazeera) When long-distance runners are in their stride, thoughts weave from pace and distance, to discomfort and the environment.

For Feyisa Lilesa, the Oromo marathoner who won a silver medal for Ethiopia at the Rio Olympics, his thoughts go to friends and family dying and disappearing in anti-government protests.

Lilesa grew up running 7km to school and back in his home state of Oromia, the protest epicentre, and it is hard for him to forget where he came from.

Ethiopia protests: Fire and gunshots reported at jail

“Even when I practised, personally my legs were running but my mind was also racing, preoccupied by the suffering all around me,” he told Al Jazeera’s The Stream through a translator Monday in Washington, DC.

“All this has been on my mind for a very, very long time.”

‘Ethiopian police killed hundreds of protesters’

Oromo youth tired of being Ethiopia’s largest ethnic group yet treated like second-class citizens, have been protesting for nearly a year.

They began when the government floated a plan to expand the capital into land worked by Oromo farmers, then continued after security forces used live bullets to tamp down the unrest.

Lilesa says his wife’s brother went missing in one of the protests, and his friend died in a suspicious fire at a prison where opposition figures were held.

On track for the Olympics, the 26-year-old knew he could not show support in the streets, but he could bring the Oromo cause to an even bigger stage.

“As soon as I was selected for the Rio Olympic team, I decided if I won and got a good result, I wanted to use that opportunity to raise awareness and the voice of my people.”

Lilesa says he did not share his plans with his family because he did not want to worry them. They would have to find out when the rest of the world did.

Ethiopia protests: Opposition wants prisoners freed

As he neared the finish line in the men’s marathon event on August 21 in Rio, Lilesa crossed his wrists in an “X” above his head, a sign of Oromo solidarity.

“I knew this was being live broadcast around the world, and I wanted to show that the protests in Ethiopia were peaceful just like my sign was,” he recalls.

“As I was looking to the left and to the right, the place is a stadium with people in the stands, and they thought this was just a sign of celebration, winning the silver and celebrating.”

UN demands probe of Ethiopia protest killings

Lilesa says Kenyan runner Eliud Kipchoge, who won the gold, asked what he was doing and then said he was sorry Lilesa had been carrying such stress.

The stress has only increased.

After his race, Lilesa told the press his government would kill him if he returned home, a claim Getachew Reda, Ethiopia’s communications minister, laughed off.

“He’s making a big fuss out of nothing,” Reda told Al Jazeera by telephone from Addis Ababa on Sunday, the Ethiopian New Year.

“I think that wasn’t good thinking, but he’s entitled to do whatever he wants to do.”

Lilesa wants to explore his options in the US.

He stayed in Brazil two and a half weeks after the Olympics ended, waiting for a US visa for people with extraordinary skills or abilities.

It came with unusual speed.

WATCH: Are Ethiopia’s Oromo being violently repressed?

He is now in Washington where he kicked off a media blitz on Monday wearing a slim black suit with white piping, his hair in a medium-length afro.

He is telling the press he is not seeking asylum, that he will spend the next few months training out West where the altitude is higher, while he figures out what his best for him and his family.

In a sit-down interview with Al Jazeera, he relied on a translator to express the grief he feels being separated from his wife, five-year-old daughter and three-year-old son.

“Every time I call my wife, they want to know when I’m coming. They ask me, ‘What are you up to, when are you coming home?’ This makes me emotional inside, so even when I call on Skype, I have to fight back tears.”

The Oromo, Ethiopia’s largest ethnic group, allege systematic persecution [Wolfgang Kumm/ EPA]

His children have a better life than he did growing up because of the comforts that being an elite runner in Ethiopia brings.

The irony, he says, is that growing up poor, working on a farm, living far from school, is what grooms the best runners.

“The kind of living environment that leads people into running is not the kind of comfortable living they have right now.”

But the environment still is not what Lilesa wants for his son and daughter, or any other Oromo child growing up in Ethiopia.

He looks to the US, an ally of Ethiopia, as a better example of what his country could be.

OPINION: The ‘Ethiopia rising’ narrative and the Oromo protests

“I heard Obama making a statement when there were children in killed in America by gun violence and he cried on the national TV. That’s the kind of government you have. But on the other side in Ethiopia, we have a government that is killing its own people, children as young as nine years old,” Lilesa said.

“The freedoms Americans enjoy here, and the kind of government they have, that’s what the American government should be pushing Ethiopia to do.”

US President Obama got flak last year when he praised Ethiopia for its “democratically elected” government after the ruling party won 100 percent of parliamentary seats.

Even Getachew Reda, the Ethiopian minister, told Al Jazeera’s The Stream he is “not particularly proud” of that statistic.

Reda considers his government a work in progress and insists “some officials will have to be removed for having failed their people”.

The assurance do not impress Lilesa, who says he does not trust Reda or anyone else in the Ethiopian government.

What it would take to bring him home, he says, is real change.

“I want the superiority of one ethnic group to end. If everyone does not have equal power, their different political, religious views respected, in the future, there will not be sustainable peace in the country.”

With a temporary US visa, and an unknown future, little seems sustainable for the runner right now.

But he is an endurance athlete, familiar with the long game.

His hero, after all, is Oromo marathoner Abebe Bikila, who won the gold medal in the 1960 Summer Olympics while running bare foot.

Lilesa says he does not consider himself a hero, but he understands why some people call him that.

“They carry around a deep wound, and when a doctor touches a wound, it makes you feel better. I sort of rubbed their wounds.”

Ethiopia blames ‘outside forces’ for protest death toll

(EurActiv) — The Ethiopian government has hit back after the international outcry over the rising death toll from protests in the country, blaming “outside forces” for fomenting the trouble.

More than 500 people have now been killed since November 2015, according to Human Rights Watch and other activist bodies, and several thousand detained – largely following protests by the Oromia and Amhara people.

It has also raised questions in the EU, where Ethiopia is one of the largest recipients of development aid, and also a beneficiary of the bloc’s new Emergency Trust Fund for Africa, aimed at mitigating migration flows from Africa.

Now Addis Ababa has hit back, admitting “bystanders” had died during the protests, and that the government had blocked internet access, but claiming “a group of people living inside and outside of the country” were behind the protests.

That seems to be a reference to the Ethiopian diaspora, concentrated in the US, who have often complained they are the subject of bugging by the government in Addis.

State Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Taye Atske-Selassie admitted that “the government has accepted most of the issues of concerns that broke out in different parts of the country as consequences of bad governance, unemployment and the likes.”

And – in a rare mea culpa from the authoritarian government in Addis Ababa – the minister admitted, “The government’s response to the public concern was also very sluggish.”

The escalating death toll this week saw some 13 NGOs write an open letter to the United Nations Human Rights Council, complaining of the government’s brutal suppression of what – they say – were largely peaceful protests.

The letter – signed by Amnesty International, the Association for Human Rights in Ethiopia, the Ethiopian Human Rights Project, FIDH (International Federation for Human Rights), Reporters Without Borders and others – state that at three separate protests in August alone, 100, 30 and 70 demonstrators were killed.

Yesterday (12 September), another Ethiopian Olympic athlete, this time the paralympic runner Tamiru Demisse, made the ‘arms crossed over the head’ gesture symbolising the Oromo people – echoing that of compatriot Feyisa Lilesa, who is now in the US, believed to be seeking political asylum.

Last week, the European Commission was pressed on whether funds from its new flagship Emergency Trust Fund for Africa, aimed at mitigating the roots causes of irregular migration, could be reviewed or even suspended in the wake of the situation.

A Commission spokesman stressed that monies from the ETF were channelled only through NGOs and aid bodies, not directly to the government in Addis Ababa.

NO EMERGENCY TRUST FUND MONEY GOES TO ETHIOPIAN GOVERNMENT, COMMISSION STRESSES

No monies from the EU’s flagship Emergency Trust Fund (ETF) for Africa goes to the Ethiopian government or its agencies, the Commission stressed yesterday (6 September), as human rights groups say more than 400 people have been killed in clashes with the government.  EurActiv.com

Taye said he had explained the government’s version of events to various foreign ambassadors in the Ethiopian capital.

However, he added that “the facts on the ground have ignited discontent and they are taken over by the subjective views and agendas of a group of people living inside and outside of the country”.

He later returned to the theme, saying “In a country like Ethiopia, where its rapid economic growth has impressed the world, the recent clashes have a negative implication to the achievements made [sic].

“In this regard, the government has to be more active and responsive to respond to the public’s demand.

But he warned, “It should not let outsider forces interfere in the internal matters of the country. In other words, the facts on the ground which resulted in public discontent should not be taken over by subjective agendas of outside forces.”

Taye confirmed he had briefed ambassadors in Ethiopia. However he rejected a call for outside, independent, investigation into the deaths.

He also described the shutting down of parts of the domestic internet within Ethiopia as a “hard choice” but “an immediate solution to protect youth from communicating with those extremist groups.”

The government in Addis Ababa – in power since it overthrew the Marxist Derg regime in 1991 – is largely comprised of the Tigray tribal grouping.

People of the Oromia and Amhara regions complain their voices are unheard by the centralised government. Protests against the forced expansion of the capital into the Oromia region forced the project to be largely dropped.

Felix Horn, Africa expert at Human Rights Watch, has previously written that expat Ethiopian groups in both Europe and the US were targeted by the government.

He said, “Ethiopians living in the UK, the US, Norway, and Switzerland are among those known to have been targeted with Addis Ababa’s spyware.

“The European Commission should lead efforts to regulate the export of such [EU-developed] technology to governments with poor human rights records.”

Olympian Feyisa Lilesa: From Rio to America, I will keep fighting Ethiopia’s oppression

As he crossed the finish line in Rio, Ethiopian marathoner Feyisa Lilesa made a statement of protest, honoring the plight of his people back home. Now fearing retribution for him and his family, Feyisa continues to speak out, despite an uncertain future. (Erin Patrick O’Connor, Adriana Usero/The Washington Post)

Feyisa Lilesa is an Ethiopian Olympian and winner of a silver medal in the men’s marathon at the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

(The Washington Post) — On Aug. 21, when I reached the finish line of the men’s marathon at the Olympics in Rio, I crossed my fists above my head. This is sign of peaceful protest used by my people, the Oromo, for the past 10 months. I did it to raise awareness; hundreds of my fellow Ethiopians have been killed by security forces only because they peacefully protested against injustice. I knew there were millions of people watching the Olympics, and I wanted the world to see me. I want to tell the world what is happening in Ethiopia — in Oromia, Amhara, Ogaden, Gambella and elsewhere.

I know if I go back to Ethiopia I will be killed, arrested or put on a list of people never allowed to leave the country again. Ethiopia’s government spokesperson made a comment in the media that I would be safe. But government security forces have killed hundreds for just doing what I did. Crossing my wrists in Rio has already had a great impact on my life; I am now separated from my dear mother, my supportive wife and my precious children in Ethiopia, whom I miss dearly. I am here safely in the United States on a special skills visa for the time being.

As I was preparing for Olympic competition, my thoughts were always preoccupied with the suffering of my people. The Oromo are Ethiopia’s single largest ethnic group. The Ethiopian coffee that Americans drink comes mostly from my region. We are also well known for our long-distance runners. Peaceful protests against the government started in November when the government was forcing Oromo farmers off their land and selling it to foreign investors. Since then, human rights reports say more than 500 people have been gunned down by the security forces, but I believe at least twice as many have been killed. This includes at least 12 people that I know from my home district of Jaldu in Oromia. Tens of thousands have been arrested. Families do not know what happened to their sons and daughters after they were taken by the army and police.

While training for the Olympics, I feared for my security, because of some philanthropic work I was doing to help young Oromo students who I knew had no opportunities. I was afraid that someone could even jump out from the bushes and take my life while I was out running alone. I have not had a day when I could put my mind and body in sync to focus entirely on my training.

Recently while I was in Rio, a huge fire broke out at Qilinto prison outside of Addis Ababa. Ethiopia’s famous political prisoners were there awaiting trial, some for months or years. Others were held without being charged. Local media reported that gunfire could be heard before and during the fire. A week ago, I received the news that my close friend, Kebede Fayissa, was killed during that incident. His charred body was sent back to his family. He was arrested on Aug. 6 for protesting. I suffer knowing that I was preparing to go to the Olympics in Rio while Kebede was being arrested for doing the same thing I did — standing up for our people. Now he is gone.

The Oromo just want their full rights like any other people. They want justice, they want free speech, they want government accountability, they want a free press, they want full participation in the political process and for their constitutional rights to be respected and protected by their government. Yes, we protest, but ours is a peaceful protest.

But things are getting worse in Ethiopia. I fear for what could happen in the future. Our grievances have not been heard in the rest of the world because the government has blocked communication. Here is my question: Can nonviolence succeed if no one hears our voices or sees our protests? We all yearn for peace, but the government continues its attacks. I fear that if the killing does not stop, people could abandon nonviolence in self-defense.

My country is an important ally of the United States. We in Ethiopia and people around the world see America as a beacon of democracy and promoter of human rights. Allies should not let allies commit the abuses that happen in Ethiopia every day. I don’t think that the United States wants Ethiopia to disintegrate. I am asking the U.S. government to demand an explanation from Ethiopia and to condemn the brutal and unfair actions of the government. The United States needs to push hard for democracy in Ethiopia. I think that is the only thing that will keep my country together.

I have no plans to initiate contact with the Ethiopian government, and no one from the government has reached out to me. If the government desires to have contact with me, it should free all political prisoners. It should also free those who have been arrested without even being involved in politics at all. That includes freeing all Oromo, Amhara and those from other nations and nationalities who have been unjustly detained.

I’m a runner, not a scholar or politician. But I know that all people yearn for fairness and justice. I will continue to race and pursue my career, and I will speak out until the Oromo and others in Ethiopia find justice.
