Ethiopia is making nonviolent Oromo dissent impossible

(OPride)The Ethiopian parliament on March 30, 2017 voted to extend by four months the state of emergency it declared in October 2016 to suppress the unprecedented Oromo protests that engulfed the country for a year and a half. The Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) controls every seat in the legislature after claiming 100 percent victory in the May 2015 elections.

Ethiopia adopted the emergency law under the pretext that ‘foreign elements’ are threatening the country’s peace and security. The draconian decree was drawing closer to its sixth month end, when on Thursday, Siraj Fegessa, Ethiopia’s Minister of Defense and Head of the Command Post – a body established to oversee the decree – told lawmakers, despite relative peace and security in the country, a prolongation is required to ensure that the repression of Oromo protests reaches “a point of no return.”

Even before the declaration of the martial law, Ethiopian security forces have summarily killed over 1,000 peaceful protesters and committed a range of serious human rights violations. By declaring the state of emergency, authorities sought to intensify the crackdown on Oromo uprising. One particular phrase in the constitution’s state of emergency clause ((Art 93(4)(b)) especially appealed to Ethiopia’s authoritarian government. It empowers the Council of Ministers to ‘suspend such political and democratic rights’ guaranteed under the constitution.

Not every disturbance warrants the declaration of an emergency decree. The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), which Ethiopia ratified in 1993, stipulates that the “situation must amount to a public emergency which threatens the life of the nation” for member states to proclaim a state of emergency. The treaty emphasizes the paramount importance of human rights safeguards even during the exercise of such “temporary and exceptional” decree.

In other words, the power to ‘suspend political and democratic rights’ does not absolve Ethiopia from its human rights obligations. Yet since the declaration of the state of emergency, the already dismal human rights condition in Oromia took a turn for the worst. The emergency measures empowered the Command Post to conduct arbitrary arrests and searches without a warrant, impose curfews and suspend basic human rights guaranteed both under the 1993 treaty and the Ethiopian constitution.

In fact, the Constitution limits the scope of the Council of Ministers power to suspend rights guaranteed under the law in the same provision that confers such powers on it. Accordingly, the law stipulates that the suspension shall be ‘to the extent necessary to avert the conditions that required the declaration of the state of emergency.’ In addition, ICCPR states that measures taken during the state of emergency should be limited to the extent strictly required by the exigencies of the situation.

The Ethiopian Constitution and other international instruments that Ethiopia ratified, particularly the ICCPR, provide for non-derogable rights that cannot be suspended even during a state of emergency. Notably, the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights has no derogation clause obligating Ethiopia to uphold all the provisions of the Charter even during a state of emergency.

Ethiopia’s constitution explicitly states provisions dealing with the federal state structure and some basic individual and collective human rights as non-derogable rights. As such the government cannot derogate from individual rights against inhuman treatment or punishment, right to equality and nation, nationalities and people’s right to self-determination including the right to secession. The constitutional requirement to interpret the human rights chapter of the Ethiopian constitution in conformity with the ICCPR also makes the Right to Life a non-derogable right. In the absence of a derogation clause, the African Charter goes one step further and obligates Ethiopia to uphold all the rights guaranteed under the Charter.

In declaring a nationwide state of emergency, Ethiopian authorities tried to legitimize the extrajudicial killings and other heinous crimes committed through direct act or omission of its security forces most notably during the grand Oromo protests across Oromia, the Irreechaa massacre, the Qilinto prison fire and killings in Amhara region during protests against the incorporation of Wolkait region into the state of Tigray.

During the last five months, under the cover of the state of emergency, Ethiopia resorted to yet more repression and violent use of government power to crush peaceful Oromo dissent rather than addressing legitimate Oromo demands. Even by government’s own account, authorities detained  , hoarding detainees into overcrowded ‘rehabilitation camps’ under terrible conditions.

Politically motivated charges

Ethiopian authorities have now arrested and charged most of the senior leadership of the sole legally registered Oromo political party, the Oromo Federalist Congress (OFC). Prominent advocates of nonviolent struggle, including Bekele Gerba, Dejene Tafa, and other defendants, were charged under the sweeping anti-terrorism proclamation for allegedly inciting the Oromo protests.

The chairman of OFC, Dr. Merera Gudina, was also arrested in December upon his return from testifying before the European Parliament in Brussels by the invitation by EU Parliamentarian, Ana Gomez. In a letter addressed to the Ethiopian Prime Minister, the President of European Parliament, Martin Schultz, raised concerns about Merera’s arrest noting that he took part ‘in meetings in the European Parliament’ which he said is “a House of Democracy where different voices can be heard from foreign governments and representatives of opposition groups.”

On February 23, prosecutors brought four counts of criminal charges against Merera, alleging that he violated the State of Emergency regulation, the country’s Penal Code and Anti-terrorism proclamation provisions. These politically motivated charges include an attempt to disrupt constitutional order by instigating Oromo protests, meeting individuals designated as ‘terrorists’ during his EU visit and giving interviews critical of the government to the Voice of America radio.

The state of emergency has been used together with the anti-terrorism law to intensify government crackdown on Oromo dissent. Since its adoption in 2009, the Anti-terrorism proclamation has been instrumentalized to clamp down on Oromo dissent. In 2011, the EPRDF controlled parliament proscribed the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) as a terrorist organization. Since then, Ethiopia has heavily relied on vague and broad provisions of the terrorism law to criminalize what the government deems “encourages or provides moral support’ for the OLF.

Ethiopia uses various mechanisms to restrict and maintain its stranglehold on the free flow of information including censorship, intimidation and arrest of journalists and bloggers. The emergency regulation and a provision of the terrorism law bans reporting on Oromo protests and other events that the government says constitutes providing moral support for the OLF. This has made an already embattled Oromo media even more vulnerable. The chilling effect forced independent publishers, including the Addis Standard, which reported extensively on the Oromo protests, to suspend their print magazines.

Notwithstanding its obligations under the Constitution and international instruments it ratified, Ethiopia has been trampling over the non-derogable individual and collective rights of the Oromo. As stated in ICCPR General Comment 29, government measures with regard to rights from which these instruments permit derogation were not tailored to the exigencies of the situation for the duration, geographical coverage, and material scope.

On March 15, the Command Post had lifted some of the emergency restrictions, including arbitrary arrests and search without warrant, curfews, and bans on the media citing the relative calm in Oromia. Fegessa told reporters that “the situation for which the restrictions were imposed could now be treated on a regular law enforcement processes.”

Given the relative calm in Oromia today, the exigencies that authorities cited to declare the state of emergency do not justify its extension. Instead, Ethiopia has now put Oromia under a de facto military rule, leaving little room for nonviolent Oromo dissent. The sustained protests that drew international attention to the plight of the Oromo people shattering the make-believe ‘Ethiopia rising’ narrative were unprecedented but the Oromo quest for freedom and self-determination did not start in 2015. It’s been going on in the background during the entirety of EPRDF’s dictatorial reign, often withstanding persistent crackdown on nonviolent Oromo dissent.

Prior to his arrest, Merera warned that Ethiopia will descend into an armed conflict if EPRDF does not address the demand of the Oromo people. The state of emergency might enable the government to intensify repression in the short term but it certainly will not crush the Oromo dissent to “a point of no return.” On the contrary, continued official repression is hardening public grievances and making the Oromo people ever more skeptical of nonviolent resistance as a way to achieve their freedom.

Here Are The 10 Countries To Be Destabilized By The United States In The Next Four Years!! (4 African countries among)

(How Africa) — They are both motivators and barometers of upcoming events. For these ideas boxes, in which the main lines of US foreign policy are elaborated, Libya, Syria, Yemen, the South China Sea and Ukraine are already in the past. Apart from some adjustments to be made here or there, they have moved on to something else. They are already drawing up plans for the future US president’s policy.

In an analytical note entitled ”  Ten countries Whose stability can not be taken for Granted  “, one of the think tanks, the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), defined the next ten countries that represent major challenges for The White House in the next four years. The Think Tank considers these countries to be unstable, so we know what it means to Washington. Clearly, these are the countries in which the future chaos will unfold.

In reality, these countries are no more unstable than another. They have not had more manifestations of popular discontent than France, Germany or the United States. Even rather less than more for some of them. Similarly, with the exception of Turkey, arrests at demonstrations are of the same order, and even less so if one takes into account the fact that the violence on the part of the demonstrators in these countries is often remotely guided To cause open conflict with the authorities.

There is, however, a big difference between violent demonstrators. If they are condemned in Paris, Berlin or Phoenix, they are thugs, but become political prisoners if they are condemned in any country to destabilize.

The ten countries of concern to the AEI are:

1. The Maldives . When we talk about the Maldives, the only images that come to us are images of holidays, paradisiacal islands. Only, the Maldives have two peculiarities. On the one hand the archipelago is located between the southern tip of India and the American base Diego Garcia, and on the other hand it is an Islamic republic, therefore an ideal place to implant an embryo of Islamic State. For now, these supposed terrorists are not doing anything, but the Think Tank is planning to kidnap tourists. As he says, we can be sure that these abductions will take place.

2. Mauritania . Another Islamic Republic, as if by chance. Having come to power thanks to a coup d’état, the current president had to, in order to build a certain legitimacy, lend itself to elections validating its coup d’état while preserving the forms. In exchange for this recognition, he promised to fight terrorism, a terrorism that did not exist then in Mauritania. The first “terrorist” act will occur soon after. Indeed, when we commit ourselves to fighting terrorism, it is not only the means of struggle that are provided, but also the terrorists. Now the Islamic State is well established, straddling Mauritania, Mali and Algeria. The American Think Tank already tells us where the chaos will come from.

It is slavery that will be the spark. Although slavery was legally abolished in that country, the state appears to be powerless to enforce the laws, partly because of mentalities, but also because of the lack of economic means to accompany these laws. If the UN had really wanted it, it would have been long since slavery disappeared in Mauritania. The three neighboring countries to the north, Morocco, Algeria and Mali, inhabited by the same slave tribes, have never had to face these accusations.

Considered as a refuge for terrorism (artificially implanted), a country practicing slavery (it is an acute socioeconomic and societal problem, not a legal one), and finally, adds the AEI, country of smugglers They do not say the nature of the smuggling). 3. Algeria . This is one of the biggest pieces. One of the most coveted as well. The AEI says it itself: one of the richest. What is the criticism of Algeria? As for the first two, terrorism. The presence of the AQIM in the south of the country is the basic pretext. In addition to this classic boat pretext, they closely monitor the death of Abdelaziz Bouteflika and apparently do not intend to let the succession be done without them. According to them, “the long-time strong man of Algeria, will probably leave before the end of the next four years”.

They predict that the successor will have to face the radical Islamists who might seek revenge for having been dismissed from power for so long. Again, if they predict that there will be a confrontation, there will be. We have seen that after the war in Libya there was a redeployment of Al Qaeda in northern Mali and Mauritania and in southern Algeria.

For now, terrorists do not venture too far inside the country, probably waiting for the whistle of the outbreak of hostilities. They will not lack weapons since they drew all they needed in the Libyan arsenal. The AEI is already announcing a catastrophe for Europe (implying that the United States must intervene to save Europe again).

4. Ethiopia . This time, it is not an Islamic state or an Al Qaeda. The AEI presents Ethiopia as the most fragile country in the world ruled by an autocratic and repressive power. On 9 October, we published an article entitled Alert! New destabilization is underway in Ethiopia.

The American Think Tank confirms what we said. This country is among the countries to be destabilized. As always, when they can not invoke terrorist reasons, ethnic and religious divisions come to the rescue. There is not a single region in the world outside Europe where ethnicities or religions have not been used to push populations against each other.

In Ethiopia, a multiethnic country in which Islam has always rubbed shoulders with Christianity, they were no exception. They have already calculated that the country comprises 30% of Muslims whose population growth is faster than that of Christians, and that this will eventually provoke inter-religious conflicts. The troubles have already begun, and the bottom of the problem is known: China is there, and well established.

5. Nigeria . For this country, the most populous of Africa, there is nothing new. It will only be the continuation of a process of destabilization that has begun for a long time. And there, all the usual tools are activated; This is the total. Terrorists (Boko Haram), pirates transferred from Somalia to the Gulf of Guinea, inter-ethnic problems (there are 250 ethnic groups), armed rebels against the central power, and of course, inter-religious frictions.

In 2014 we witnessed the global launch of Boko Haram, with the help of Michelle Obama, with the spectacular kidnapping of hundreds of schoolgirls. In August 2015 we published an article with a photo showing the abducted girls holding a banner of the group with the profession of faith written in Arabic but with Hebrew calligraphy, which gives us clues about the origins of these terrorist groups. To complete the picture, the AEI mentions in its study one of Nigeria’s major problems, corruption.

According to the Think Tank, the country would have lost $ 400 billion due to embezzlement and corruption since 1960, more than total international aid to Africa during the same period. What the American company does not say is that for every dollar that goes down south, there are at least 10 that go into the pockets of the partners in the north. But for the United States, such a country with so many defects can only call for a rapid rescue of its fragile democracy, otherwise Africa as a whole will be consumed.

6. Turkey . Turkey also has a pedigree loaded. The problem is that this is a delicate matter with this NATO member. How to get rid of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan without dismembering the country? The AEI is back on the abortive July coup followed by its massive purge and the state of emergency still in progress. Many things have already been tried against Erdogan, but the fact that we want to avoid the chaos in Turkey seems to have brought him luck. However, the Turkish president is not immune to further elimination attempts. The AEI suggests that there may be more violence on the horizon . Anyway the AEI foresees a chaos after the dead or lively departure of Erdogan, a chaos that should be prevented at all costs.

7. Russia . For Russia, the AEI problem is both simple and complicated. It is simple because it can be summarized in a name: Putin. Once Putin disappeared, everything is settled. They could then pick up where they left off before they arrived. But here, Putin is there and does not seem willing to give them the pleasure of disappearing.

There remain complex solutions and they rely on the same classic recipes: terrorism and religion. They are counting on the more rapid increase of the Russian Muslim population compared to the Christian population to stir up inter-religious conflicts. Chechnya and Daghestan remain for them two foundations for radicalism to cultivate and maintain. Incidentally, they also intend to play with ethnic problems with the map of the Tatars.

The AEI then poses a question: given that Muslims represent an increasing proportion of the conscripted youth population, will Russia be able to count on its own army in a sectarian conflict?

8. Saudi Arabia . Saudi Arabia could become a very serious problem for the United States, mainly through their own fault. On the one hand, the United States strengthened Iran against Saudi Arabia by lifting the embargo, while at the same time lowering the price of oil pushing the Saudi economy to the edge of the precipice.

On the other hand, the war in Yemen turns out to be a quagmire for the kingdom and, to top it off, the Saudi king is possibly suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, according to the AEI. The question for the United States is whether Saudi Arabia will be able to fulfill its role in stabilizing the Middle East and the world economy under the agreements that bind them.Otherwise, solutions are needed.

9. Jordan . Jordan is more than an ally of the United States, it is an Israel bis, at least as far as its government and its monarchy are concerned. The problem is that the Jordanians are Arabs who see what is going on around them.

According to the AEI, despite the denials of the Jordanian government, Jordan is in crisis today . The successive waves of refugees have put enormous pressure on the Jordanian economy. King Abdallah and Queen Rania are not popular in their country, even if they are adulated outside. Again, to take matters into their own hands, terrorism comes to the rescue of the Americans.

The big fear is that after being beaten in Iraq and Syria, Daesh fighters flock to Jordan. This gives us indications about the future destination of some of the Daechians after their future debacle.

10. China . The big chunk for the end. The AEI sketches some vague features to give some reasons for hope, but the only solution they advocate is … to wait. Wait for China to collapse on its own, like the Soviet Union. To do so, they rely on income inequality between cities and the countryside, which they believe will move the population, and the future consequences of the one-child policy. With this type of solutions to shoot down, China has time to see coming.

Note: I wrote this piece two weeks ago, and I have since been agonizing over whether to publish it or not, for fear that it may create an unnecessary side issue for the easily-distracted among us. I’ve now decided to publish it, because of a deplorable assertion made recently by a certain “social-media activist” regarding the existence/non-existence of the OLF.


I knew Hacaalu Hundeessaa when he was a struggling artist, long before he became the cultural force that he is today. It does not surprise me that he has attained greatness only a few can achieve. If you spent some time with him as I did, you would instantly notice his intelligence, eloquence, fearlessness, humility and sharp humour – qualities that perhaps explain his current towering public persona. Let me offer a personal testimony about another admirable quality of this young man yet to be fully appreciated by the general public, and that is his charity. A few years ago, Hacaalu refused to accept a payment for services he offered at a special concert organized by a friend, telling him (I’m paraphrasing here), “I couldn’t, because you are a student now, and a future asset of the Oromo. My payment comes in the form of your service to our nation.” I was present when this remarkable exchange took place, and these words will stay with me as long as I live.

More to the point. Here is why I think Hacaalu’s latest single, JIRRA, is a powerful antidote to the Shira that has been spreading among some segments of the Oromo diaspora for a while now. You have to be obtuse to miss the cultural significance of this song. It must, of course, be pure coincidence that the single came out in the same week as the insidious machination that the song is tackling is exposed for what it represents, with a few unscrupulous Oromo characters in the diaspora audaciously and maliciously misrepresenting the ongoing Oromo Protests led by Qeerroo Bilisummaa Oromo, as one organized by the Ethiopian government without a shred of convincing evidence. That the originators of this vicious propaganda are using as evidence, TPLF’s predictable move to exploit their insinuation, shows how dangerous these characters can be if they are not challenged in a timely manner. These unmoored Oromo persons must know that The TPLF is not that negligent not to use an opening they are handing it – a ‘Hail-Mary scoring opportunity’, as it were – to confuse and potentially divide its mortal enemy, the Qeerroo Bilisummaa Oromo. Perhaps, most Oromo activists who are pushing this spurious argument mean no harm – they might even be convinced that their treacherous role-models are God’s gifts to the Oromo; even so, they are guilty of misidentifying cause (the allegation that TPLF is orchestrating the ongoing Oromo Protests) for effect (TPLF’s desperate attempt to capitalize on it).

It is such a disconcerting state-of-affairs among the Oromo diaspora that Hacaalu is bearing witness to when he sang the following lines in his inimitable ways. No wonder he chose the precariousness of life in Oromia over the “comforts” of living in the diaspora under these lamentable circumstances. In my view, these powerful words (see below) encapsulate the essence of the instant classic, JIRRA. Shira nu irratti dalagamaa turee fi ammallee dalagamaa jiru ifatti mul’isa. In eight minutes of superb artistic brilliance, he not only exposes the contemptible Shira that a few in the Oromo diaspora have been cooking, but he also rejects it emphatically, running into the warm embrace of his *true love* in Gincii, Gullisoo, Dadar, Shaallaa and other localities in Oromia (contemplate the careful sequencing of the towns!), signalling the political maturity of the Qeerroo back home (for whom Hacaalu is a great example), representing an auspicious development for the Oromo people – a long-suffering nation which has been prone to debilitating confusions and divisions induced largely by a Machiavellian propaganda machine from within, unbefitting the GADAA people. JIRRA captures the shifting zeitgeist in the Oromo political landscape, entwining Hacaaluu with the thriving Oromo cause for the ages.

Mohammad al-Amoudi(Kaliti post) — Saudi Arabia detained Mohammad al-Amoudi, Ethiopian businessman along with 11 princes, four current ministers and tens of former ministers in a probe by a new anti-corruption body headed by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Saudi-owned Al Arabiya television reported.

My article of October 26, 2017 on “Ethiopia, grave turmoil lurking in the air?” provided some impressions on the current affairs in Ethiopia, touching on the issue of the Oromo People’s Democratic Organization, (OPDO’s) internal partitioning. The paper didn’t address the possible consequences of this partitioning and its virtual impact on the ongoing Oromo political discourse. Below, I will attempt to discuss this issue in more detail.

In the previous paper mentioned above, I listed three internal variances of OPDO, parted on the basis of their political outlook; i) EPRDF loyalists who accept the superiority of the TPLF albeit at times concealed; ii) OPDO loyalists who stand for strong and independent OPDO with hopes it will take over the post-TPLF Oromia; and iii) Oromo loyalists, – nationalists who now form the majority of OPDO, but most of them occupy the lower echelon of OPDO’s political hierarchy. As stated earlier, the last group serves in OPDO for other motives than political conviction, and it carries no political loyalty to OPDO, a party most grew observing as a puppet of the enemy. I now build upon these account because this taxonomy will likely determine the fate of the ongoing Oromo struggle more than the strength of the TPLF.

1. The first group, EPRDF loyalists, has diminished in membership becoming an insignificant minority within the OPDO. However, they carry a threatening voice if backed by the TPLF military and can quickly turn to become a dominant power, especially if the TPLF opts for an armed attack for direct occupation of Oromia. There is no other component of the OPDO now ready to serve the TPLF on call, to guide it through reoccupation of Oromia – as replica of 1991. In fact, there is no guarantee of TPLF’s success even if it opts for military intervention with the support of EPRDF loyalists. The likely outcome of TPLF’s military intervention with EPRDF loyalists is that it will control the cities with military curfew, with merciless brutality – setting a bogus peace in an ungovernable state of the nation. This will quickly devastate the economy and the country cannot sustain the emergent situation for long. So, while it may emerge with an increased brutality that we have become so familiar with from time to time, the re-emergence of TPLF with the EPRDF loyalist OPDOs poses no serious long-term threat on the Oromo struggle. Furthermore, the consequence of re-lifting the loyalist group to power will have to be by a coup d’etat type intervention to oust the OPDO leadership now in power, a move that will bond the relationship between the remaining OPDOs and that of OPDO with the OLF as well as other Oromo forces. Most in the TPLF, including the TPLF security machinery see this option as unattainable. Strategically, the EPRDF loyalists are therefore nuisances to the Oromo struggle. In the short run, as relapsed informants, they can still harm the struggle, i.e., the damage they can inflict should not be undermined.

2. The position of OPDO loyalists (second group) is somewhat arbitrary; some can turn around and become EPRDF loyalists if the loss to their personal gains and the threat to their investment is too great to risk. Most, however, see the status quo as unsustainable, and allying with TPLF as a death trap. They will strive to carry the torch of OPDO, but they are not ready to defend it with their blood. But then the effort to keep OPDO as a mainstream Oromo political organization for the post-TPLF era depends much on what the OPDO will do in reaction to what is going on now, less on its bad deeds of the last few decades. Today the willpower to forgive the OPDO is high among the Oromo in as long as the OPDO is willing to dissociate itself from the TPLF and cease serving this ruthless regime. The OPDO loyalists are well-aware of Oromo gullibility, its short memory to offenders and its passion to forgive. OPDO writers seem to be able to capitalize on this Oromo virtues over the recent several weeks, dangerously at times.

There is a great deal of danger some OPDO loyalists have exhibited in their quest for political standing. Some of them have assertive political ambitions, an ambition that once propelled them to power at the cost of serving the enemy camp against their own people. This ambition pushes them to see all other Oromo political organizations, OLF, OFC, OFDM, etc. as political contenders that should be defeated quickly, or weakened promptly before they become formidable contenders. The damage they can inflict on the Oromo struggle by turning against their political ‘rivals’ cannot be underrated, and their assault, obscure or obvious, can truly have a profoundly negative impact on the Oromo struggle. It is exceptionally dangerous because their target overlaps the TPLF’s target, albeit for a different goal. The end results of the two goals are the same – weakening of the Oromo camp, contrasting a stronger TPLF. This targeting of Oromo political institutions emanates from ignorance, a feeble assumption that freedom is within short reach, and therefore one needs to start dressing before one is beaten to the track. It is a short-sighted conduct that kills collective Oromo ambition, that of these ambitious individuals included. Only in this context can one understand the sudden surge of opposition of this camp against Oromo political groups. I don’t see pro-Tigrean sentiment in the writings of some of these individuals; I really think they are, more often than not, Oromo nationalists with misplaced and miscalculated ambitions. This in no way is to deny prevalence of Oromos who are paid infiltrators working for the TPLF, nor to deny presence of those who ally with the TPLF for personal gain or for political convenience. This after all, is how OPDO emerged almost three decades ago, and it can emerge again.

3. The third group of OPDO, the Oromo nationalists are firm in their outlook, steadfast in their resolve, and if not confused and manipulated by the onslaught of media, will remain to be contributing bulks of the Oromo struggle.

4. Conclusion: the distance the Oromo struggle can travel as formally embraced by a large body of the OPDO leadership has an end. Granted, OPDO is pressed between two hard rocks, inextinguishable popular demand of the Oromo people on one side, and unyielding boss that ties its hands and legs, controls everything it does or say on the other. Hitherto, it has been obeying the boss, even if it meant resisting the mass. This explains the OPDO propaganda asking for restraint, soliciting for intervention of elders, – all in search of breathing rooms within the pressing hard rocks.

This pervasive propaganda from the OPDO leadership asks to show restraint in “peaceful demonstrations”, to keep the “gains of the struggle”, and to “protest while developing the economy,” etc. One must dissect these phrases in order to understand the point.

I think the call for peaceful demonstration is fair, private properties and human rights must be protected. But what really is the “gain of the struggle” that OPDO leaders are talking about? What “gain” should we be afraid of losing? What is the expected result of supporting peaceful demonstration without openly standing for the commanded changes? And how is OPDO envisioning the end goal? Where does OPDO want to take us and how?

The TPLF still dominates the socio-politics and military of Oromia and the country, they appoint all federal posts, they keep Oromo political prisoners in jail, still partition our land to the highest bidder, the ecology is devastated by deliberate negligence, OPDO couldn’t defend Oromos from Liyu police, TPLF concocts conflicts between Oromos and other ethnic groups, and also among Oromo groups, it has stockpiled military defense in Tigray, corruption is still rampant with Tigrean beneficiaries at the top, …. and some OPDOs want Oromos not to block roads to stop trucks from looting Oromia. Oromos by and large are confused, OPDO, a political organization that was never listed as part of the Oromo mainstream struggle is now “leading” the struggle, almost paradoxically against itself. Demonstration that gave rise to the awakening of OPDO is now discouraged, and an invisible “gain” is protected. There is and must be a concern for reversal of the trend, because many are confused by OPDO’s roadmap, or lack thereof.

Reasserting, a clear review of OPDO’s leadership suggests that:

i. The TPLF still calls the shots, and OPDO leadership can screech as much as it wants as long as it doesn’t confront Tigrean supremacy. EFFORT still owns more than any other of Ethiopia, Ethiopian army is still led by TPLF, the airline, manufacturing, banks, diplomacy, virtually everything is controlled by TPLF, and we haven’t heard any challenge from OPDO officials to this TPLF’s supremacy. The recent bravado by OPDO as a stronger and independent political organization is just a posturing as of now, it may be independent but within itself. Neither should the fate of the Oromo struggle depend only on, or be hostage to a few OPDO leaders or individuals, no matter how good the intention of these leaders may be. Let OPDO leaders do what they can to help the tide of the Oromo struggle, get out of the way if you can’t help the tide.

II. OPDO leadership seems to beg for more independence from TPLF, but it is also protective of its status as loyal opposition party in Ethiopia. OPDO leadership’s solid desire to protect its position in Oromo body politics, mingled with its fear of the TPLF, dictates how OPDO navigates through the complexity of the ongoing politics, – a form of navigation that can’t lead even close to freedom. This also explains the “gain” that OPDO leaders want to protect, it is a façade of sovereignty OPDO has enjoyed, nothing to do with a gain for the Oromo people. Whether OPDO’s gain can translate to Oromo gain is a wishful thinking for now, and it remains to be seen if it can spill over to our people.

III. We have noticed that OPDO supports demonstrations as long as they don’t interfere with TPLF’s income or even ego. Any risk to the TPLF’s political power will be dealt with swiftly. Given these facts, the role OPDO can play in facilitating Oromo freedom is not apparent, what they can ostensibly do or deliver is not obvious. Other than emotional leap service or beautiful narrative, OPDO leadership has shown no strategy to support the Oromo struggle. Freedom in the end is not replacement of a brutal tyrant by a weaker house dictator who once upon a time served the tyrant loyally. OPDO leaders couldn’t pressure the TPLF, or themselves facilitate the release of Bekele Gerba whose bail was illegally suspended, or demand for reestablishment of civic organizations such as Macha Tulama, leave alone political parties. The contrast between the escalating morale of OPDO and the controlling ego of the TPLF is unsettling.

IV. Not even once have these articulate OPDO officials suggested how they plan to free Oromia from TPLF’s yoke, – their own making after all. The never called for a reelection, or demanded the release of leading Oromo political prisoners, etc. They carefully avoid anything that confronts the wrong done by TPLF. Simply stating “things must change” is not enough to claim the floor of Oromo nationalism after gashing this same nationalism for decades. Qube generation has long surpassed trivial declarations such as “things must change,” – they are knocking at the door of freedom. Hearing someone say something for the first time, something that one was too shy to utter for decades, makes it interesting to hear. But the excitement of hearing the unheard shouldn’t be given an emancipating power, nor the capacity to halt a quest for a fundamental change.

Finally, there must be a concern, that the calm some OPDO leaders call for now may derail the Oromo struggle; it buys time for the TPLF, and buttresses inter-Oromo conflicts even deeper. I am fully cognizant, that demonstrations are dangerous, TPLF may use it to occupy and rule over Oromia with untold brutality, it disrupts the economic growth of the people, etc. But the alternative leads to accepting a perpetual rule of an enemy who will never recognize our freedom, least as a reward for our effort to please them with caution. This should never be an option.
